Key Contents of ASTM B898 (Reactive and Refractory Metal Clad Plate)

  • Scope

Defines the materials covered, including reactive and refractory metals clad to base metals.Specifies the intended applications, such as pressure vessels, heat exchangers, and chemical processing equipment.

  • Material Requirements

Specifies the chemical composition and mechanical properties of the clad and base metals.Covers acceptable base metals such as carbon steel and stainless steel.

Includes requirements for cladding metals such as titanium, zirconium, tantalum, or niobium.

  • Manufacturing Process

Describes acceptable bonding methods, such as explosion bonding, roll bonding, and other suitable processes.

Requires proper heat treatment and processing to ensure metallurgical bonding and integrity.

  • Mechanical Properties and Testing

Specifies tests for bond strength, tensile strength, and shear strength.

Includes bending and corrosion resistance tests to ensure durability and reliability.

Dimensions and Tolerances

Sets thickness requirements for both the base metal and the cladding layer.

Defines allowable variations in dimensions and flatness.

  • Inspection and Certification

Requires manufacturers to provide test reports and certifications to verify compliance.

Allows for additional testing if requested by the purchaser.

  • Applications

Pressure vessels and chemical processing equipment requiring corrosion resistance.

Heat exchangers in aggressive environments.

Marine and offshore applications where material strength and corrosion resistance are critical.

1 sample/clad plate

  • Take sample from an end of the plate.
  • For explosion bonded plate, the specimen shall be from a location which is typical of the maximum distance from the initiation point.

UT Test

  • Class A to Class C, aggred between purchaser and manufacturer.
  • If UT is not specified, Class B shall apply.

All Plates

  • Performed from the cladding metal surface.
