Industrial Highlights | Eni and Petronas will establish a New Joint Venture

Eni and Petronas have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a joint venture overseeing selected upstream assets in Indonesia and Malaysia. This collaboration aims to combine approximately 3 billion barrels of oil equivalent in reserves, with an additional exploration potential of 10 billion barrels. The joint venture seeks to achieve a sustainable production rate of 500,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in the medium term, focusing on new gas development projects to enhance their presence in the regional liquefied natural gas market. The existing operational structures of the assets will remain unchanged, while the joint venture will develop a comprehensive business plan to explore future opportunities in exploration, development, and portfolio growth. Finalization of the transaction is subject to necessary governmental, regulatory, and partner approvals.

Eni and Petronas, both prominent players in the energy sector, utilize advanced materials and technologies in their operations, including the use of clad plates in pressure vessels and heat exchangers.

Petronas

Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) is Malaysia's fully integrated oil and gas multinational corporation, founded in 1974. As the custodian of Malaysia's petroleum resources, Petronas is involved in the exploration, development, and production of oil and natural gas, as well as refining, marketing, and distribution of petroleum products. The company is also expanding its footprint in the renewable energy sector, aiming to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Petronas has engaged in projects involving the use of heat exchangers and pressure vessels. For instance, in 2014, Petronas contracted Meggitt PLC to supply printed circuit heat exchangers (PCHEs) for its second floating liquefied natural gas facility (PFLNG 2). These PCHEs are known for their compact design and high efficiency, making them suitable for offshore applications where space and weight are critical considerations. The use of advanced materials, such as clad plates, can enhance the performance and durability of these heat exchangers.

Eni

Eni is an Italian multinational energy company headquartered in Rome. Established in 1953, Eni operates in 69 countries, engaging in oil and natural gas exploration, production, refining, and marketing. The company is also investing in renewable energy sources and innovative technologies to promote a sustainable energy transition.

Eni has undertaken projects involving the design and fabrication of heat exchanger supports. In 2021, Eni's Refining & Marketing Division in Sannazzaro de’ Burgondi, Italy, commissioned a project for the creation of a heat exchanger support. While specific details about the use of clad plates in this project are not provided, the application of such materials is common in the energy industry to enhance the corrosion resistance and structural integrity of heat exchangers and pressure vessels.

In summary, both Eni and Petronas are involved in projects that utilize advanced materials and technologies, including the potential use of clad plates in pressure vessels and heat exchangers, to enhance the efficiency and durability of their equipment in the energy sector.
