Industrial Highlights | Possible New Refinery & Petrochemical Plant Construction between Guyana and Dominican Republic

Guyana and the Dominican Republic are advancing collaborative efforts in offshore oil and gas exploration, alongside plans to construct a petrochemical plant and potentially a refinery in Guyana. This development follows a 2023 memorandum of understanding between the two nations aimed at joint energy projects.

The Dominican Republic has expressed interest in Guyana's Berbice offshore block, previously managed by CGX Energy, and is considering the development of a new refinery and urea plant.

Concurrently, Guyana is encouraging Exxon Mobil and its partners to channel natural gas from offshore facilities to onshore locations. This initiative aims to support power generation, petrochemical industries, and liquefied natural gas projects, thereby enhancing national revenue. These topics were recently discussed by Dominican President Luis Abinader and Guyanese President Irfaan Ali at an energy conference in Georgetown, Guyana.

Guyana's Oil and Gas Industry

Guyana's oil and gas sector has experienced rapid growth, with production increasing from 15,000 barrels per day (bpd) in December 2019 to 630,000 bpd in January 2024. The country anticipates reaching a production capacity of 940,000 bpd by 2025. ExxonMobil, leading a consortium, has discovered over 30 oil reserves since 2015 in the offshore Stabroek Block. The industry has significantly contributed to the nation's economic expansion, with the oil and natural gas industry accounting for 56% of GDP growth in 2022.

Dominican Republic's Oil and Gas Industry

The Dominican Republic's oil and gas industry is smaller in scale compared to Guyana's but plays a crucial role in the nation's energy supply. The country relies on imported crude oil for its refineries, which produce refined products for domestic consumption and export. The Dominican Republic is exploring opportunities to enhance its energy infrastructure, including the potential development of a new refinery and petrochemical plant in collaboration with Guyana.

Use of Clad Plates in Heat Exchangers and Pressure Vessels

In the Oil & Gas industry, Heat Exchangers and Pressure Vessels are critical components that often require materials capable of withstanding harsh operating conditions, including high pressures, temperatures, and corrosive environments. Clad plates, which consist of a combination of different metals bonded together, are commonly used in these applications to provide the necessary strength and corrosion resistance.

While specific information regarding the use of clad plates in heat exchangers and pressure vessels for the Guyana-Dominican Republic collaborative projects is not readily available, it is standard practice in the industry to utilize such materials in the construction of these components. Given the aggressive operating conditions typically encountered in offshore oil and gas exploration and production, the use of clad plates in heat exchangers and pressure vessels is highly probable.

For instance, ExxonMobil's operations in Guyana, including the development of the "Wales Gas Vision" project, involve complex infrastructure that likely incorporates advanced materials such as clad plates in its heat exchangers and pressure vessels to ensure durability and efficiency.

Similarly, the Dominican Republic's interest in developing a new refinery and petrochemical plant in Guyana would necessitate the use of high-performance materials like clad plates in the construction of heat exchangers and pressure vessels to meet the demanding requirements of the petrochemical industry.

In summary, while specific details about the use of clad plates in the heat exchangers and pressure vessels for the Guyana-Dominican Republic projects are not explicitly documented, the application of such materials is a standard practice in the oil and gas industry to ensure the reliability and longevity of critical infrastructure components.
